A lot of people don’t realize it, but just as there are conventions of etiquette in face to face conversations, there are etiquette conventions across the internet. Discussion boards are a great way for people to interact across a wide range of topics. There are many communities across the internet which have had humble beginnings as a small discussion forum.
Keep the following in mind when taking part in a discussion forum.
- Use nice language. Nobody likes to be sworn at in real life, and they don’t like to be sworn at over the internet either. Most discussion boards have moderators who basically police everyone. If you start using foul language you will very likely get kicked out.
- Attacking people over the internet has become more and more common. It is very easy for someone to say what is on his or her mind when they are in the safety of their home and can verbally abuse people in relative anonymity. As with the use of bad language, attacking people will do you no good and will probably get you kicked off the discussion board.
- Read the terms and condition of the discussion board. This way you can familiarize yourself with what is expected on contributors.
- Have a browse and get to know the topics of conversation before posting. Random topics of conversation which are way off topic may not be well received.
- Write clearly using structured language with appropriate spelling and grammar. Always proofread before you hit “submit” on a post.
Always remember to treat people with respect on a discussion board.
